A print after a painting attributed to Giovanni Lanfranco, datable c.1606-07, then in the possession of Nicola Verdura whose current whereabouts is unknown (sold at Christie's, 8 December 1995, lot 99); reproduced in reverse. Dated within image at lower centre: 1632. Lettered with attribution of the design to Raphael at lower right: RV. in. Annotated in ink at lower centre: 90 [?].
The composition of the painting is based on the so-called Madonna del Passeggio, a picture generally attributed to the workshop of Raphael after a design by the master (c.1518-20), currently on loan to the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh (inv. no. NGL 064.46; see RCIN 851085 for a print after this painting) from the Duke of Sutherland Collection.
This print is a late reprint of an etching by Giacomo Antonio Stefanoni dated 1632. The etcher's name originally located in the margin below image at lower left has been replaced by the publisher's details, which have been subsequently scratched off. For an impression of this reprint with the publisher's address, see RCIN 851090.
