The Virgin and Child with St Anne and the young John the Baptist c.1720s
Mezzotint and etching printed in brown ink, over an ochre woodcut tone block | 45.0 x 33.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851009

A print which, according to the legend below the image, is based on a drawing attributed to G.F. Penni then in the collection of Dr Richard Mead. The composition corresponds with the so-called La Perla, a painting now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (inv. no.301) generally attributed to Giulio Romano (c.1518-19), possibly after a design by Raphael; with an entirely different background and lacking the figure of St Joseph. A photograph of La Perla can be found at RCIN 851004.
Showing the full-length seated Virgin supporting the Christ Child and resting her left hand on the shoulder of St Anne, with the young John the Baptist approaching the group on the left offering fruit.Provenance
Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
