Albumen print | 23.8 x 23.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850968
-
A photograph of the so-called Madonna of the Candelabra, a circular painting now in the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore (inv. no.37.484), the attribution of which is still disputed. The execution of the painting is generally ascribed to the workshop of Raphael, with the master’s role in the invention of the composition being questioned.
Ruland (1876) attributed the painting to Raphael and catalogued it as being then in the possession of the late Mr Hugh Andres Johnstone Munro of Novar (Scotland).
Showing the Virgin supporting the Christ Child seating on a cushion, with two angels holding candelabra at either side.Provenance
Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
