'Negroes Sunday-Market at Antigua' [lettered title] published 1806
Hand coloured aquatint | RCIN 755955
-
An etching showing a market scene on Sunday at Antigua, with enslaved traders sitting on the ground selling meat, eggs and vegetables, and European buyers browsing the market.
The print shows a Sunday market run by enslaved traders. Enslavers were obliged to feed their enslaved labourers,to reduce costs they allowed many to grow their own vegetables or tend chickens on small plots of otherwise unusable land. Markets were set up by enslaved people to sell their goods on Sundays. The revenue generated from these markets was an important part of the local economy, and the income was sometimes used by the traders to buy their freedom. -
