Princess Margaret's Robe for the Coronation of King George VI 1937
Silk velvet, gold lace, ermine | RCIN 75058
-
A robe of dark purple silk velvet, lined in white silk and edged with three rows of gold lace and ermine, with ermine cape.
Provenance
Worn by Princess Margaret at the Coronation of her father, King George VI, at Westminster Abbey, 12 May 1937.
The shorter form was inspired by the shorter robe worn by Queen Mary as Princess of Wales at the Coronation of King Edward VII, 1902, as Queen to the Delhi Durbar, December 1911, and as Queen Dowager to the Coronation of King George VI, 1937.
Following the Coronation the Robes of the King and Queen and the two Princesses were displayed at the Royal School of Needlework in South Kensington 19 May - 17 July (Queen Elizabeth visiting the exhibition on 22 June). It is not clear whether the Princess's dresses and robes subsequently toured to Edinburgh and Australia with the adult Robes.
