A map of the march route of Hessian battalions in Hampshire, Wiltshire and Sussex, 1756. Seven Years War (1756-63). Oriented with north to top.
The first military action of the Seven Years War, in which England supported Prussia against Austria, France, Russia, Sweden and Saxony, began with an offensive launched by Frederick of Prussia on 29 August 1756. Long before this, it had become apparent that war was inevitable - the French had already landed on Minorca in April. In the meantime, Cumberland, in order to strengthen his army, had drafted Hessian troops from Germany to the south of England. This small map shows the proposed landing places and destinations of the Hessian troops. Although not signed by William Roy, it was originally housed in Portfolio D of Col. Robert Napier's map collection, the catalogue of which describes ‘C[ol.] Roy’ as the author.
Condition: three fold lines, discoloured and worn along folds.Provenance
From Portfolio D of the map collection of Lieutenant-General Robert Napier (c.1703-November 1766), Secretary for Military Affairs to Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland [RA Vol.6/10]. Subsequently acquired by George III (1738-1820)
