-
An order of battle of the British and Jacobite armies at Prestonpans, 21 September 1745. Jacobite Rebellion (1745-6).
The ‘plan’ is not a conventional topographical map; it comprises only the order of battle for each army. The Rebel army is shown as one long, thin continuous rectangle which has been filled with a selection of motley colours to represent the plaid. The regiments of both armies are named.
Inset: [bottom, below plan:] Order of Battle intended, but not executed for want of Gunners.
Additional text: [down right side of map, in rectangular panel, a key, A-H, K-L, to the positions of the two armies and their component parts, together with the measurements of the squadrons and battalions, and a note on the marching order of the Highlanders:] Explanation.
Condition: two fold lines; small tear, bottom right; bottom left corner cut off. Verso: bottom, brown spotting; top left, water-stained patch and slight ghosting from the removal of Cumberland's cipher label.Provenance
From the collection of military and naval maps and prints formed by Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland (1721-65), third son of George II; subsequently acquired by George III (1738-1820)
