-
Statue of a gladiator lunging forward with his left arm outstretched and holding a sword in his right.
Cast for Charles I in around 1630, this is one of the earliest reproductions of the ancient statue discovered in 1611 during excavations instigated by Cardinal Scipione Borghese at Nettuno south of Rome (now Paris, Louvre).Provenance
Placed in the Privy Garden at St James's Palace during the reign of Charles I, by the time of the Restoration it was in St James's Park. Moved to Hampton Court Palace, probably during the reign of William III. Moved to Windsor Castle by George IV, 1829. During the later nineteenth century this statue formed the centre of the round pool in the East Terrace garden; prior and subsequent to this, a fountain was placed at the centre.
