Another edition of 702947.s. In 1757 Princess Augusta, Dowager Princess of Wales commissioned William Chambers to design the Alhambra, echoing the palace built by the Arab rulers of Spain in Grenada in the 13th century. Chambers also designed the building based on a Turkish mosque as well as a ruined arch and several temples. The Chinese Pagoda, still standing at Kew, was part of a general trend for chinoiserie or works of art inspired by China, Japan and other Asian countries. Chambers visited China in the 1740s and was thus able to draw on his experience to produce authentic designs. The plate was engraved by Rooker after William Marlow for Chambers’s Plans, Elevations, Sections and Perspective Views of the Gardens and Buildings at Kew, published in 1763 and dedicated to the Dowager Princess of Wales. The publication was ‘undertaken by Royal Command’ and funded ‘by Royal Bounty’.
