Provenance
Presented to Charles, Prince of Wales during his tour of Papua New Guinea in August 1984, when he received the title of Lapan of Manus Island. The title had been bestowed on his father, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, twenty-eight years previously. During the initiation ceremony, two young women placed dogteeth necklaces and a headband on the Prince and presented him with a basket containing a lime-gourd. He then received an axe, a spear and a bunch of betel nuts as a sign of peace.
