An Algerian gourd-shaped powder flask with spherical body, narrow tapering neck and baluster stopper attached by a chain with pearls and emeralds. The neck and body embossed or chased with arabesques, ogee arches and scrolling foliage. The flask decorated with purple velvet, emerald and enamels.
Provenance
Sent to George IV when Prince Regent by the Dey of Algiers and presented by the Algerian Ambassador, Hagdi Hassan, on 25 February 1811.
According to the inventory of Arms and Armour at Carlton House, the flask was presented with 'A Gold Embroidered Belt with Gold Buckle and Gold open work plates to the end of the Straps', now missing. A note added, 'This Handsome Gold Bottle is also supposed to be either for the purpose of holding Gun Powder or Liquor'. -
