A lotus-shaped Siamese gold bowl with a stylised foliate rim; enamelled in green, red and blue with stylised foliage; a short circular stem; on a circular spreading foot.
Bowls of this kind were used for offerings to deities. They were made in diminishing sizes and placed inside one another on an altar in an arrangement known as Pai Sri.Provenance
Sent to Queen Victoria by King Rama IV of Siam (King Mongkut) and presented by his ambassadors at Windsor Castle in November 1857.
A similar example is in the collection at the Château de Fontainebleau, France, where it was presented to Emperor Napoleon III by King Rama IV’s ambassadors in 1861. -
