A Balinese kris and scabbard; with a carved lightwood hilt with a darkwood band and curved pommel; the ferrule set with diamonds; the double-edged undulating steel blade with raised watering, grooved and with flowerheads and leaves; with mottled wood scabbard, one side with gilt-metal casings, the other engraved with flowerheads.
Provenance
Presented to George IV when Prince Regent by Stamford Raffles, 10 May 1817. Given to Raffles by 'the Sultan of Bali Ling on the Island of Bali', according to the Inventory of Arms and Armour at Carlton House. Raffles was Lieutenant-Governor of Java from 1811-1816 and presented a number of Indonesian kris to the Prince Regent on his return visits to England.
