Indonesian kris, the handle of brown carved wood with a gilt-metal ferrule set with diamonds; the black double-edged steel blade with raised watered decoration. The light wood sheath encased in rose gold, with repoussé decoration on one side set with diamonds (103 stones) amidst scrolling foliate design. Noted in the Carlton House inventory as 'peculiar in the working of the blade'.
Provenance
Presented to George IV when Prince Regent by Stamford Raffles, 10 May 1817. Said to have belonged to Hamengkubuwono III (1769-1814), Sultan of Yogyakarta in Java. Recorded in the Armoury at Carlton House with the note, 'the Kris of the Late Sultan of Djokgykarta [sic] - in Java - peculiar in the working of the Blade' (CH AA 2716).
