Aquatint with etching and hand-colouring of Napoléon I, Emperor of the French. Whole length in profile with a wide brimmed hat, tail coat and trousers of light brown colour. The Emperor is pictured standing with hands in pockets, and with a view of potted flowers, a space, and a garden fence in the background. With English inscription and publisher's address below, 'Published July 24 1820 by R. Cribb & Son 288 Holborn.' Said to be sketched from the life at Longwood.
After his surrender, Napoleon was exiled to the remote island of St Helena, where he was under the guard of a British garrison. This print, showing him in civilian dress, reflects the continued British interest in the fallen Emperor.Provenance
Probably acquired by George IV
