An engraved frontispiece to a volume of essays by seventeenth century Protestant scholars and princes, compiled under the direction of Frederick Achilles, Duke of Württemberg-Neuenstadt. This volume of essays, Consultatio de principatu inter provincias Europae (first published in 1613) was dedicated by the Frederick Achilles to the Holy Roman Emperor Matthias, whose portrait appears at the top of the frontispiece.
The title of the volume, Fr. Achillis Ducis Würtemberg consultatio de principatu inter provincias Europae; habitae Tubingae in illustri collegio. Tubingen, is engraved within a cartouche supported by allegorical figures representing the spread of Protestantism. Above, the portrait of the Emperor is framed in a circular border, supported by the figures of Religion and Fame. At the foot of the page, small scenes of a siege and a working letter press below are illustrated beside ornaments of war and learning. -
