A bronze sundial engraved with a figure of Father Time; on a baluster shaped limestone pedestal carved with acanthus leaves and roundels of national emblems and the intertwining initials E and P for Queen Elizabeth II (then Princess Elizabeth) and Prince Philip (then Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten). Octagonal foot and stepped plinth base. Inscribed 'In this garden fair amydst your flowers serene I stand and show your sunny hours'. The limsetone pedestal is similar to the marble pedestals supporting the pair of sundials by Thomas Tompion at Hampton Court Palace.
Provenance
A wedding gift to HRH Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten on 20 November 1947 on the occasion of their marriage from the Parishioners of Corsham Regis. Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten had been posted to HMS Royal Arthur, a land establishment of the Royal Navy close to Corsham, shortly before his wedding. Temporarily placed at the home of Lord Methuen, Corsham Court, between 1947-57, when installed at Frogmore House.
