Engraving | 48.5 x 37.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 603505
-
Engraving of James Francis Edward Stuart as prince, aged 16. Half length with wig, lace cravat, armour and sash over left shoulder. With three medallions with Garter emblem, coat of arms, and the Prince of Wales feathers below. With French inscription below. Borders trimmed. Late second state, for first state see RCIN 603504.
The title, identifying the prince as 'James III, King of England' has been printed from a second plate, which probably added to impressions published after the sitter assume the claim to the throne on the death of his father in 1701.
This is one of a number of prints of Stuart sitters acquired by George IV, who had a great interest in the family and its history.
Provenance
Purchased by George IV when Prince Regent, from Colnaghi & Co. on 15 April 1816 for 15s (Royal Archives GEO/MAIN/28093)
