CAROLUS II. DEI GRATIA ANGLIAE SCOTIAE FRANCIAE ET HIBERNIAE REX. 1680
Mezzotint | 34.8 x 25.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 602519
-
Mezzotint of Charles II as king. Bust length with lace cravat and armour. With Latin inscription below. Borders trimmed. Second state with re-engraving of face. Very fine print. For first state see RCIN 602520. For the companion portrait of Catherine of Braganza, see RCIN 602760.
This portrait of Charles II, alongside a portrait of his consort Catherine of Braganza, was engraved by Abraham Blooteling after portraits by Sir Peter Lely, Principal Painter in Ordinary. Blooteling came to England from Amsterdam in 1673, and was one of the first engravers in England to master the technique of mezzotint. Throughout his career Blooteling engraved many prints after Lely, who painted the King and Queen many times after the Restoration of 1660.
