Engraving with etching of Mary, Princess of Orange. Bust length with curled hair with pearl ropes, pearl necklace, low gown, and lace edged bodice. Within an oval border decorated with garlands of flowers and putti. With Latin inscription on cartouche below. First state, for second state with sitter aged see RCIN 602081, and for third state with an altered border see RCIN 602082. For a corresponding print of William II, Prince of Orange, see RCIN 612056. One of a series of ten prints of the Princes of Nassau and their wives, after drawing by Soutman after Gerrit van Honthorst, with the portraits engraved by Jonas Suyderhoef and Pieter van Sompel, and with the borders etched by Pieter Soutman, published in 1643.
In 1641 Frederick Henry's 14 year old son, later William II, Prince of Orange (1626–50) was married to Charles I's daughter Mary Stuart (1631–60) aged just nine. The couple took up residence in The Hague in Amsterdam. This print, alongside a portrait of William (see RCIN 612056), depicts the newly married couple. The union would prove to be a successful one and William and Mary would go on to have a son, the future William III of Britain.
