Bone china, painted in enamels and gilded | 2.5 x 24.2 x 24.2 cm (diameter) | RCIN 59761
-
A set of 173 glazed bone china dessert plates, painted in enamels and gilded. The turquoise border is paired with an undulating white band. The white band is lined with pink rose wreaths, forget-me-not swags and circles of pink roses. Arising from the centre is the dual cypher of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, VA, surrounded by a pink rose wreath and topped with a crown.
Provenance
Part of a similarly decorated dessert service known as the Victoria pattern service, purchased by Queen Victoria from Minton’s stand the day before the Great Exhibition opened, 1851. The pattern was then named in her honour. Part of the service was sent to the Austrian Emperor as a gift. The Queen retained the remainder, supplementing it with plates bearing the VA cypher.
