Pair of Derbyshire fluorspar and gilt-bronze candelabra, each in the form of an urn, with a foliate lid which reverses to form the candle socket; surrounded by swags, with a square base and each on a pedestal with lions' masks and further swags and stepped, pierced, circular base.
Provenance
Manufactured by Boulton and Fothergill in a 'Cleopatra' vase form; originally the pair may have had candle branches. A similar pair, with branches and three steps to the base, were acquired by Catherine the Great in 1771, delivered by the British Ambassador,Charles Cathcart, 9th Lord Cathcart. They remain in the State Hermitage, St. Petersburg.
Acquired by Queen Mary in 1927. -
