A set of twelve silver-gilt sauceboats with covers and liners. The domed lid has a cone finial. Each sauceboat is cast with a dog-headed serpent handle and a winged Egyptian herm beneath the spout, the sides with scarabs, on three hoof feet, standing on an oval base with leaf border, and three lion mask and paw feet.
Provenance
These sauceboats form part of the Grand Service in the Egyptian taste, and were intended to accompany similarly decorated tureens, salts and candelabra. They were billed to George IV, when Prince Regent, in June 1811, for £876 12s 3d. Six of the twelve were originally ungilded.
