Salt hallmark 1721/2
Silver gilt | 4.8 x 13.4 x 8.5 cm (whole object) | RCIN 51385
-
A pair of silver-gilt double-lidded box salts (spice boxes) of rectangular form with shaped rounded ends and central hinge; the lids are engraved with the coat of arms of William III and Mary II (1688/9) and WMR monograms. The salts stand on four curved legs with scroll feet.
Provenance
Although the salts carry the arms of William III and Mary II, they date from the reign of George I and were presumably designed to replace earlier examples. These salts remain in use to this day and are usually placed on the table at State Banquets.
