A set of thirty six circular silver-gilt salts, each with a flat rim cast with a lancet border. The partly-ribbed body is applied with Egyptian masks above three lion paw feet. The salt is supported on a circular stand with a lancet rim and bracket feet with anthemion decoration.
As well as pieces in the neo-classical and rococo style, the Grand Service, George IV's magnificent dining service, incorporated a number of pieces with Egyptian motifs. These salts were delivered in two separate groups to Carlton House. Twenty-four, in silver with gilt interiors, were invoiced in 1811 at £478 7s 9d. Ten further salts were supplied in 1821 (for £218 3s). When these were billed it was noted that they were gilt, to match the existing 24, which must have been entirely gilded in the interim. It is not known when the final two salts appeared in the collection.Provenance
