A set of silver-gilt plates; the reeded rim cast with fruiting vines and scallop shells. The plate is engraved with the Royal coat of arms, with supporters, mantling and coronet.
Provenance
The original delivery of plates to Carlton House in June 1811 included 24 dozen of this pattern. Of these 148 were supplied by Digby Scott and Benjamin Smith, and 138 by Benjamin and James Smith. Two date from a later period. Together with six dozen soup plates the invoice totalled £7.425 5s 4d with a further £225 for engraving the coats of arms. The number of plates supplied is indicative of George IV's love of entertaining on a large and dazzling scale.
