Paul Sandby (1731-1809)
Windsor Castle from the Eton Shore c. 1780-1805
Pencil, watercolour and bodycolour | 37.5 x 96.4 cm (sight) | RCIN 452398
-
A bodycolour of the north front of Windsor Castle, seen across the River Thames. In the foreground on the riverbank are several horses, a family sitting on a fallen log, and a wooden cart. On the right, several trees in front of wood and brick houses. On the left on the river is a boat with a mast, and another further back.
A very similar view to RCIN 452655. A pen and wash drawing in the Royal Collection (RCIN 914617) of the same view was used by Sandby as the model for an aquatint of Windsor from Eton published in 1777 (for example, British Museum 1904,0819.757). It was probably also the preparatory study for this work, a similar view in bodycolour that was bequeathed to the Royal Academy by William Sandby, and two other works in the Royal Collection (RCINs 451608 and 452655). A similar watercolour dated 1802 was at Bonhams, 1 December 2015, lot 84 formerly in the collection at Hooton Pagnell Hall.Provenance
Purchased by George V (Christie's, May 1919) (ex-coll. Rt. Hon. J.W. Lowther)
