Queen Victoria appears to have worn two Garter badges (Lesser Georges) until 1861: in the early part of her reign, the large badge supplied to the future George IV by Thomas Gray in 1787 and the Marchant George with its cameo cut by Nathaniel Marchant (1739–1816). The latter badge is clearly depicted in paintings of the Queen, for example Winterhalter’s The First of May. The badge is first mentioned in the list of pieces removed to London from Windsor for the Queen’s use in 1837: ‘[A diamond George] with onyx engraved by Marchant’ and was repaired by Rundells in April the following year.
