Fabergé’s coloured gold cigarette cases with striped, sunburst and radiating designs are among the most elegant of their kind. Usually fitted with a compartment for matches and tinder, these cases were regarded as the most stylish accessories of their day. Bainbridge commented that cases such as this one would always appeal to men of taste and that they felt and looked good because they had ‘just the right weight of precious metal to measurements’. This particular case was given to Tsar Nicholas II by his mother, the Dowager Tsarina Marie Feodorovna on his saint’s day.
