Ivory, mirror glass, silk | 83.6 x 58.0 x 46.1 cm (whole object) | RCIN 42378
-
Carved ivory model of the eighteenth century Ramnagar Palace in Benares. The model has a mirrored forecourt, steps up to ornate decorative carved entrance, a large pillared balcony and roof terrace. The hinged top and drawer is lined in yellow silk embroidered with silver and a red floral motif.
Ivory carvers at Benares (modern-day Varanasi) may have been inspired by the workboxes being produced by craftsmen based in the region of Vizagapatam (modern-day Visakhapatnam), who made ivory models and furniture for European patrons. Little is know of the craftsman 'Sivaprasad', other than that he was a craftsman attached to the court of Benares. Historically the rulers of Benares had retained carvers at their court.Provenance
Presented to King Edward VII, when Prince of Wales, during his tour of India in 1875-76 by Ishwari Prasad Narayan Singh, Maharaja of Benares. The Prince visited the palace on 5 January, where a reception was held in honour of his visit.
