This is a copy of Angelica Kauffmann’s self-portrait in the Academy of St Luke in Rome. She is leaning on an anchor, the traditional attribute of Hope. It was engraved by William Wynne Ryland in 1775 with four lines from Alexander Pope, beginning: ‘Hope springs eternal in the human breast …’
