The inscription by Stewart on the reverse of this miniature gives the age of the infant Princess Victoria as about three years, giving a date for this miniature of c. 1822-3. It is one of a series of miniatures by Stewart depicting Queen Victoria in childhood from the ages of about one to thirteen. Another version of this image is also in the Royal Collection (421036).
Anthony Stewart trained with the Scottish landscapist Alexander Nasmyth in Edinburgh before turning to miniature painting, firstly in Edinburgh and later in London. He specialised in painting children.
