Oval tortoiseshell box, with gold mounts, inset with an oval, glazed, enamel miniature of Charles I (1600-1649), bust-length, in armour with a lace falling collar and the ribbon of the Order of the Garter, surrounded by chased gold floral border. Plain gold interior.
The head of Charles I is taken from the equestrian portrait of the King by Anthony Van Dyck known as 'Charles I on Horseback with M. de St Antoine'.Provenance
C.H.T. Hawkins, Christie's London 28 June 1904 (lot 2105); purchased by the Prince of Wales (later George V) and given to Edward VII on his birthday, on 9 November 1906.
