This is a copy of Winterhalter's portrait of Prince Albert (RCIN 405130) painted in 1859.
After the portrait was completed as a companion portrait to one of Queen Victoria (RCIN 405131), the Queen described them as 'truly magnificent'. Prince Albert wears the uniform of Colonel of the Rifle Brigade and the ribbon and star of the Garter and the badge of the Golden Fleece. On the right, behind the table, lie the mantle and collar of a Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath and the Prince's Field-Marshal's baton. His shako, which, from 1800 onwards became a common military head-dress in most armies, is on the stool on the left and in the background we can glimpse the sea. Numerous copies were made of the two portraits as they were regarded as the new official likenesses.Provenance
