Peasants Outside a Country Inn c.1640-43
Oil on panel | 34.1 x 47.2 x 1.0 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 407274
-
A small panel depicts a matter-of-fact scene: not much happens in the garden of an inn with a sign painted with a crescent moon and a beer pot (seen also in CWLF 92, 406363). The value of the painting lies in the amount of detail Teniers can convey in his apparently careless touch and the little comic vignettes.
Provenance
Purchased for Frederick, Prince of Wales, possibly by Philippe Mercier in 1735; recorded in the Gallery at Windsor Castle in 1792 and in the small room next to the Library in 1816; in the Picture Gallery at Buckingham Palace in 1841 (no 107)
