Diana (?) resting c.1630-80
Oil on canvas | 43.4 x 35.6 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 406665
-
A partly naked female figure is seated, her head resting on her right arm. The darkened condition of the picture makes it difficult to decide more about its subject and attribution. The figure has previously been called Diana, goddess of the chase, although there seems to be no trace of Diana's traditional crescent moon on her head, and she may be simply a nymph.
The picture was bought as a Schedoni but this attribution has now been rejected. Associated with the style of Furini it can be linked to a lost Diana by him, known only through an engraving. However, the execution seems to be much harder than Furini's and its quality does not appear to be very high. The picture should possibly be considered in relation to Cagnacci.Provenance
Purchased through Ludwig Gruner from Sign Minardi in Rome, 1847; given to Prince Albert by Queen Victoria on his birthday, 26th August 1847; recorded in the Prince's Bath Room at Osborne House in 1876 (no 107) as Bartolomeo Schedoni
