Frank O. Salisbury (1874-1962)
King George V (1865-1936) 1928?
Oil on canvas | 91.8 x 71.7 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 405939
-
A portrait of King George V at half-length, facing three-quarters to the left, wearing the mantle, collar and star of the Order of the Bath.
In 1928 Salisbury painted the large-scale Installation of the Knight's of the Order of Bath at Westminster Abbey (RCIN 404549) and this is presumably a study portrait of the King that developed out of that commission, painted c. 1928-35. The Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington holds a related portrait.
The King sat to Salisbury on 5 October 1933, which may have been for this or the Washington portrait.Provenance
A gift from the artist to Queen Elizabeth II, December 1951
