Amigoni was a Neapolitan painter who had worked in Venice and Bavaria before spending a decade (1730-9) in London. This is one of a pair of paintings of sporting cherubs (OM 528-9, 405811-2), which are first recorded at Kensington Palace in 1818. They were probably commissioned during the artist’s London period as part of the decoration of an interior.
Provenance
First recorded with its pair (405811) when removed from Windsor in 1805; in Queen Caroline's Drawing Room (also called 'Privy Chamber') at Kensington Palace in 1818 (no 68), where it appears in Pyne's illustrated Royal Residences of 1819 (RCIN 922151); in the Prince of Wales's Bedroom at Hampton Court in 1861 (no 629)
