The Rest on the Flight into Egypt c.1610-30
Oil on panel | 59.2 x 84.8 x 0.4 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 405523
-
This charming depicting of the Holy Family attended by angels while resting on the flight is probably a collaboration between two artists, one for the figures and one the landscape. The style resembles that of Jan Brueghel for the landscape and Hendrick van Balen for the figures, but in neither case is the quality sufficient to justify the attribution.
Provenance
First recorded in the King's Closet at Windsor Castle in 1792; probably acquired by Frederick, Prince of Wales, or George III
