Saint Catherine of Alexandria c.1540-70
Oil on panel | 58.6 x 48.2 x 1.5 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 405468
-
Shown at half-length, facing the viewer, Saint Catherine holds a martyr’s palm in her left hand and crosses her right hand over he body to rest on a sword hilt to her left. Her left elbow is supported by part of her wheel of martyrdom.
The painting is thinly painted and facile, giving the impression that it is a copy. The broad geometry of the head suggests that the original might have been by Luini, and the artist speculatively accepted as responsible for this copy is Gianpatrino.
The painting appears in Pyne's illustrated 'Royal Residences' of 1819, hanging in The Queen's Closet at Kensington Palace (RCIN 922154).Provenance
First recorded in the Store Room at Kensington Palace in 1710 as 'after Leonardo' (no 15)
