Victoria, Duchess of Kent, was Princess Victoria's mother. She is depicted wearing a formal day dress with a shawl and feathered hat, and with a spaniel, possibly Dash, running beside her. Sittings took place in the early months of 1834, and the painting was presented to the Princess 'though not quite ready' on her fifteenth birthday. On 23 April 1836 she wrote in her Journal 'My full-length portrait of Mamma done by George Hayter has been hung up in my study and looks so well. It is so like & is so beautifully painted.'
The artist made a number of changes (pentimenti) such as the outline of the feather in the hat, which was originally larger, and the outline of the left shoulder and the shawl over the left arm, which originally projected further.
