The painting depicts a fountain in the Retiro Park in Madrid, with the Observatory in the background. Roberts had visited Spain in order to gather material for pictures in 1832 and several sketches of fountains in Madrid were found in his studio after his death.
Signed and dated: David Roberts 1841. Inscribed on the back with the name of the artist, the title and the date, 1841; and as painted by the command of the Queen.Provenance
