Maria Alexandrovna, Tsarina of Russia, is shown with her head and shoulders to the front and slightly to the left, wearing a dark purple velvet dress.
Youngest daughter of Louis II, Grand Duke of Hesse; she married Alexander II in 1841. She stayed at Buckingham Palace in the autumn of 1874, at the time of her daughter's confinement. 'The Empress', wrote Queen Victoria, 'is much more pleasing & better looking than her Photographs. She is very tall, very ladylike, & amiable & très-grande Dame, with a sad expression & very delicate in appearance.'
This painting is a copy after an original portrait by Von Angeli. It is one of a pair with the portrait of Alexander II, Tsar of Russia (RCIN 404903). The artist has recently been identified as Karl Bogdanovich Wenig; he received 1000 rubles for the two portraits.Provenance
Painted for Queen Victoria; first recorded in the State Visitors, Sitting Room, Windsor Castle
