A landscape scene of the quayside beside the Moselle in Koblenz, Germany. Under the brick bridge, children are shown fishing in the foreground, as figures stroll the bank behind them; boats are moored beyond the arch in rows; in the distance is the hill-top castle of Ehrenbreitstein.
Prince Albert purchased this painting in 1843, the year in which it was made. Queen Victoria would later visit Germany, writing in her journal entry on 14 Aug 1845 that she admired 'that splendid Fortress of Ehrenbreitstein, situated on a very high rock with terraces of fortifications down to the river'. The artist Henry Gritten was the son of a London picture dealer, who exhibited his landscapes frequently at the Royal Academy between 1835 and 1845.Provenance
