Landscape with a Temple and Cascade, Figures and Cattle 1760-69
Oil on canvas | 86.7 x 118.1 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 404391
-
In the foreground, a seated and a standing woman, each with a pitcher, look towards a young man who is approaching on horseback with a cow and a sheep. At the right is a cascade and, amid rocks, a circular temple which consciously references the so-called Temple of the Sibyl at Tivoli.
This work is a pendant to Seashore with Classical Ruins, Figures and Cattle (RCIN 404101). The paintings are unusual for Zuccarelli in that they are patent pastiches of Claude, suggesting that they were painted in England or at least after Zuccarelli had visited England. They may have been given to King George III or conceivably purchased by him; early in 1771 Zuccarelli was paid by the crown for a pair of pictures, however the sum (£400 inclusive of frames) seems too high for this smallish pair of pictures.Provenance
Acquired by George III (aparently not as part of the Consul Smith collection); first recorded in the Queen’s Drawing Room at Kew in 1805 (no 9)
