SS 'Ophir' was a British steel twin screw ocean liner owned by the Orient Steamship Co. of London. In 1901 the re-titled HMS 'Ophir' took the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York, later King George V and Queen Mary to Australia to open the new Federal Parliament in Melbourne.
The Royal Collection holds another painting by SJ Mason of HMS 'Ophir', similarly escorted by two warships (RCIN 409183), although nothing is known of this marine artist.Provenance
