A label on the back describes this work as 'an exact copy painted in oil on top of a photograph of a portrait of a man, life size on panel attributed to Raphael (others believe it to be Sassoferrato) at Madrid in the collection of the Duke of Berwick and Alba, sent to HRH Prince Albert on 2nd November 1858'. The Duke in question is the Spanish nobleman of Jacobite descent, Jacobo Fitz-James Stuart, 8th Duke of Bewick (1821-1881).
Another inscription attributes the painting to Alonso Martz (active 1849), of whom nothing is known.Provenance
