Still Life with a Nautilus Cup c.1636
Oil on panel | 91.5 x 71.4 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 403948
-
This panel is signed (perhaps by a later hand) 'de Heem', but its quality does not seem to match that of original works. It comes closest to De Heem's work from around 1636, just as he left Holland for Antwerp. It is most likely to be a contemporary imitation, though it seems to be identifiable in the 1649 inventory of Charles I's collection where it is described as by 'de hem'.
A half-draped table with an over-turned glass besides a nautilus shell cup with silver gilt mounts; before this, on a pewter dish is a bone handled knife and a half peeled lemon; behind some bread, a broken walnut and oyster shell.
Signed: 'JD Heem f.'Provenance
Acquired by Charles I; sold for £11 to Remigius van Leemput on 7 July 1650 from Hampton Court (no 253); recovered at the Restoration and listed in store at Whitehall Palace in 1666 (no 530)
