Sir Pratap Singh of Idar is wearing Durbar (court) dress and sitting on a magnificent gilded and inlaid chair. In addition to his splendid jewels, he wears the badge and star of the Star of India and the Jubilee medal.
Rudolph Swoboda sailed for India on 7 October 1886. Queen Victoria paid for his passage and gave him £300 to cover his travelling expenses. In return he was to provide the Queen with sketches worth £300. Queen Victoria had suggested to Swoboda that while he was in India he should paint the portraits of two Indian Princes – Pratap Singh of Idar and Khengarji III, Maharao of Kutch (1866-1942).
