-
Soldiers with breastplates emerge over a rise from the right. They are directed by their leader who gesticulates back to the right with his left hand, and holding a staff in his right. Rocks to the right with over-hanging branches.
Provenance
This and its pair (RCIN 402837) seem to have formed part of the Consul Smith Collection acquired by George III in 1762 (Italian List nos 246-7). The pair are recorded at St James's Palace from whence they are transferred to Buckingham Palace, where they appear in 1819; by 1861 they had found their way to the Queen's Gallery, Hampton Court.
